The Case for Public Schools


In the last few months, I have probably seen the inside of more classrooms than in my entire 18 years of schooling. No, I haven’t started a new job in education or signed up for community college courses — I am in the midst of applying for my daughter’s kindergarten year at the San Francisco Unified School District.

  1. Fantastic piece. I imagine (my daughter is only two) that it must be an incredibly difficult decision to make. If it's any consolation, I went to all private schools and now, as a grown adult I don't consider myself a "product" of them. While I believe that where we are educated can have some impact on how we interact with the world, I believe that, ultimately, a love of learning is something that is most importantly fostered at home. When it comes to a drive to learn, passion is all there is -- everything else is just chalk dust and fancy computers.
